Burn Will Fold for 2011/2012 Season

Friday, April 1st, 2011

Saturdays’s game will be a sombre affair as team manager Geoff Gauthier will announce to the team the news that the Burnaby Burn Hockey Club will be shutting down operations once the 2010/2011 season is over.

“It’s not something I really want to have to do,” said Gauthier, “but it’s best I let the boys know that they’re going to have to turn in their jerseys and socks after playoffs.”

Gauthier received a call Friday from league manager Dave Rainville at Burnaby 8 Rinks, who informed Gauthier that the team was in arrears of their $11,000 annual league dues and that there will be a 24 hour period for the team to present the money to Rainville at the the 8 Rinks league office.

Gauthier immediately contacted Paul Fortier at BCIT Recreation Services, who handles the Burn’s league fees to find out where the team’s money has been going only to receive an email shortly after with the following photograph attached:

"See ya, suckers!" - Paul Fortier

Along with the photo was a small line of text that read: “How do you like my new kayak?”

With the team’s money now tied up in Fortier’s recreational activities, Gauthier and the Burn will have a difficult task in coming up with the money to keep the team alive.

Technically Still Undefeated in the Orange Unis

Wednesday, March 9th, 2011

Still technically undefeated in the original uniform.

So we went into OT. Again. That’s six times this season. There is certainly a case to be made that we are in exactly the division we should be in, although the loss column is going to dispute that claim slightly.

9-12-4-0

That’s our record. We have not lost in OT. That’s a plus. However we have 4 draws.

I’m stumped. We’re WAY better than this. Or are we? I don’t know anymore.

Bah!

Gordie Says

Thursday, March 3rd, 2011

Gordie Howe’s response to the question: “Why did players always wear a cup, but not always a helmet ?”

“You can always get someone to do your thinking for you.”

Don’t Let This Be You!

Tuesday, March 1st, 2011

This is pretty much how I look at work between game days.

Let’s stop being sad losers and start being happy winners! I know it’s easier said than done, but we’re WAY overdue for a victory. Let’s get one this Friday night.

Bring your orange socks – we’ll wear them regardless of which jersey we end up wearing. It’s time to bring back the magic that is Burn hockey.

Burnaby Burn – a winning tradition!

The Ballad of Ol’ Stainy

A Tribute to My Former Trusty Jock Strap
by Geoff Gauthier

(Please imagine Waylon Jennings reading this aloud to you)

*Not the actual Ol' Stainy

Ol’ Stainy clung to his nether regions
Not afraid of a little impact

There it hung for near seven seasons
Snug to that ol’ ball sack

Not sticks or pucks, nor skate blade slashed, a workhorse Ol’ Stainy was
Just rips and tears
From years of wear
And it was never washed because

To clean the magic off your gear was the opposite of vital
It’s superstition
We’re on a mission
To bring home the yearly title

With that in mind, it began to rot
From never being hung with care
It wouldn’t break, it was an outside shot
It wouldn’t even dare

And Ol’ Stainy fought to stay together
And he thought “Ol’ Stainy will last forever”

But then one day,
As if to say
“Goodbye, I’ve had a good a run”
Ol’ Stainy broke, it gave away
It snapped
It’d had its fun

And so on he went, the guy that lent
A persona to a cup
Off to the store
To buy one more
Twelve bucks he did cough up

For the next game
He did proclaim
The life of “Ol’ Stainy should be remembered”
He donned the new jock
He was ready to rock
With gleaming white upon his member

Three periods he did play

And sweated hard that day

At the end of the game came the blaring horn
And Ol’ Stainy soon would be reborn
